Tom's Letters
Forty-eight letters that go nowhere.
Tom has been writing letters to Sarah for eleven years. He keeps them in a box in the locked bottom drawer of his old desk and numbers each one. Around the fourth year he stopped sealing them. He writes number forty-four the night of the welcome party.

The letters are apologies "for the phone" and "for February." Tom writes the forty-eighth, a goodbye, and seals it (Chapter 19). A few nights later, Claire takes his keys, reads all forty-eight, and burns them in the fireplace with his long matches. She puts the empty box back in the drawer with the lid down so he will know without being able to ask (Chapter 24). The empty box goes with the desk when the movers take it.
