James and Natalie Whitfield live at number ten. They're lovely but private, the way people are when they're still deciding whether to stay. They come to Claire's welcome party together and stay close, and they leave for work together at eight every morning with briefcases. Claire and Tom keep meaning to have them over for dinner.

The Whitfields finally put up a wreath in December, and a curtain moves under it the morning Tom leaves. By spring they wave to Claire from their car instead of stopping.
