Margaret has lived at number two for thirty years and knows everything that has ever happened on Wisteria Court. She can't help sharing it, which Claire has always found useful. She wears the same coral cardigan to every gathering, and she visits Quinn with banana bread the first Friday after she moves in.

Both Claire and Quinn use Margaret to move information along the street. Quinn tells her about losing a sister, knowing it will reach Claire. Late in the book Quinn considers taking the journal and Tom's letter to Margaret and decides against it. After Tom leaves, Margaret brings Quinn a coffee cake and passes on Claire's story about "a place in the city." By spring her visits to Claire are twenty minutes instead of an hour, and she keeps her coat on.
